Entrepreneur Elon Musk is the most famous opponent of what has come to be known as the “woke mind virus.” According to Tim Higgins reporting for the Wall Street Journal online (December 23), “A book by the biographer Walter Isaacson released this year suggested that Musk’s antagonism toward progressives was triggered in part by one of his children’s transition to female and her embrace of Marxist politics—which the billionaire partly blamed on her high school in Los Angeles.” (End quote, boldface added).
Mr. Musk’s son allegedly decided he was a woman and when he did it became incumbent on the rest of us, from elite media journalists to landscapers, short order cooks and taxi drivers to always refer to him henceforth as she. In the corporate world, to do otherwise is to incur shaming, defamation and termination of employment. Consequently, reporters for the Washington Post, the New York Times, CNN, CBS etc. have no choice but to refer to Musk’s son as his daughter. This is Newspeak.
One of the dictionary definitions of the word virus is “a pernicious corrupting influence.” In this case the corruption is of our language. Concerning this subversion, George Orwell’s analysis of Newspeak in the appendix to his book 1984, remains the most perspicacious:
